How to Calculate Square Feet

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 12:04 am

No matter what you are trying to accomplish when it comes to home improvements you will almost always need to know how to calculate square feet. If you already know how to calculate the square foot cost then you are in good shape, but that is not the case for most people. There are however a couple of tips that can help you when it comes to calculating square feet. First of all, you could use a square footage calculator on the Internet and that would prove very helpful. However, in many cases you are not near the Internet when you need to calculate the square footage so you need some other tools to help you accomplish that. For anything rectangular area you can remember that you multiply the length times the width to get the total area. Simply round up if there are any odd lengths or widths to give you some cushion room. Areas that are circular or triangular are not quite as easy. When figuring a circle’s area you need to radius ties pi, which is 3.14. The radius is the length from the center of the circle to the outer edge. Now, when it comes to a triangular area you need to multiply the base, which is the shortest line of the right angle, by .5. You then need to multiply this number by the height, which is the longest line touching the right angle. For areas that are shaped differently you will want to create as many circles, triangles, or rectangles as possible to come up with a number that is close to the actual area.

Tips for Fixing Hoover Vacuum Cleaners

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 4:29 pm

One fine day you are at home planning on cleaning every inch of your house and suddenly you realized that your vacuum cleaner died. What the next things you are going to do if that’s being a Hoover Vacuum cleaner which has been around for years?

Majority of time, you might run up to a local repair shop and ask them to repair the Vacuum cleaner for you. If you have asked them a little more on the price it’s going to cost for the repair, you will realize the fact that within same or less price you could have purchased the Hoover vacuum parts and replaced it yourself. But then it’s always good to let the repair man do his job to perfection rather you getting involved into something which might not be fixed to function properly.

Since there is a wide variety of a vacuum cleaners available in the market today, most people often report about there slow performance or complains about the motor burn. Vacuum cleaners are motor driven home appliance system which can be repaired easily. The only point that matters over here is the price. If you have purchased a cheap quality model than, you might have to run around the repair shop more frequently than a little more expensive but stable model. Also, honest repair service is certainly going to reveal the fact that explains the reason why you choose to send the Hoover vacuum cleaner to a repair shop.

As you are aware that Hoover Vacuum cleaners are available in two types, the upright and the canister positioned models. Most of the upright vacuum cleaners use a motor as we have discussed above along with a fan that sucks the dirt off a surface and collects them in a bag. Very often this dirt is loosened as we uses the cleaner and gets inside the body via a beater bar.  These types of cleaners are easy to clean as every thing is mounted.  Problems are reported when the Vacuum parts grow in age and start to malfunction. Not only major parts like the bags, motor, filters, cord winder etc starts to go bad one after the other but small things like wires can also go bad increasing the overall cost of repair.

If you need to repair anything, try and identify what is gone wrong with the machine after which, if you think you can handle the repair yourself, unscrew the cover, get into the bad part, unhook it carefully and replace it with the new part. Test and verify before something else goes bad.

On the other hand, Canister type has all the parts placed in a separate unit other than the power unit making it easy to locate any damaged parts with easy replacement. A lot of time the vacuum cleaner belt is identified as the only problem which can be easily replaced with a new one. Just unscrew this belt which might have rolled around small plate and brush. Other time is when the suction capability is poor due to blockage in its hoses.

Overall, repairing is lot easy and related to the belt, blockage or agitator brush only. Do it yourself!

Kitchen Decorating with Elegance and Style

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 2:25 pm

You can decorate your kitchen with elegance and style all by yourself. You don’t need a home decorator to come in and do it for you and charge you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Instead, you can get some kitchen decorating ideas from the Internet or brainstorm some of your own. Once you have some ideas you will be able to start thinking of which ones you like the best as well as the options that will go best with your china dinnerware and your casual dinnerware. You must keep in mind that you want the décor to go with your everyday lifestyle, but be able to change with just a few details to elegant that will complement your Waterford crystals. For example, you might decide on a specific theme that is casual but with silver or gold chargers on the table and fine linens the décor changes to an elegant room that is fitting for your china dinnerware.
If you are on a budget then you need to make a plan. Decide what needs to be done and do as much as you can yourself. More than likely you will be able to do everything on your own, but just in case you have big plans you will be able to cut costs doing what you can on your own and just leave the hard jobs to the professionals. Painting, hanging pictures, and things of this nature should be done on your own. Carpentry work, laying tile or linoleum, and more difficult jobs should be done by a professional unless you know how to do it yourself. After you have these details covered you should start shopping. Going to discount stores will allow you to buy elegant items that have a cheaper price tag so you can get more for your money. Just remember to have a plan, a color scheme, and an idea of what you need to buy before going shopping. Otherwise, you may find something in a store that you like but that doesn’t work with your plan and you will get mixed up. So, decide if you need a wall clock, new table linens, silk plants, wall pictures, and the like and then think of the colors that you are looking for. That way when you get to a store you can just look at those specific items, buy what you need, and go home to decorate your kitchen. Not only will your kitchen end up looking beautiful, but you will have the pride of having decorated it yourself.

A Brief History of Flashlights

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 4:19 pm

Humans have been looking for ways to create portable light sources since the beginning of history. Tree branches gave way to torches which were later replaced by candles and kerosene lamps. The problem was that you still had to rely on fire for light which was dangerous and impractical in certain situations. The flashlight would soon be the answer to all of these problems. The history of the flashlight really begins with the invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879. Edison used a carbon filament, but it was replaced in 1906 by a tungsten wire filament. Around the same time, work was being done to create a portable battery. A German scientist, Dr. Carl Gassner, created the first battery in 1888.

The first flashlight was invented in 1898 by Conrad Hubert. He worked alongside David Misell, who would go on to invent the tubular flashlight. Conrad Hubert’s company, The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company filed several patents related to flashlights in 1898. (Hubert’s company would later become Eveready.)

The flashlight changed form a few times, but the basic idea stayed the same. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in flashlights which do not require the use of batteries. This means they are ready to go whenever you need them. LED flashlights still use batteries but they are an improvement over traditional flashlights because they are able to run a significant amount longer on one set of batteries. They also have very bright lights which remain consistent even as the batteries begin to fail. Surefire flashlights are an excellent choice if you are looking for a high quality LED flashlight. Streamlight flashlights are also top of the line.

Today most flashlights fall into two categories. There are flashlights that are very bright which are used by police officers, the military and security teams. These flashlights can be quite advanced and are often expensive. Most people require a much simpler flashlight which is less expensive. You can find flashlights of almost every shape and size starting at only a few dollars.

The flashlight has come a long way from its simple beginnings. It has truly revolutionized portable lighting. As advances in technology continue to occur, it seems likely that at some point battery operated flashlights will be obsolete.

If you are interested in learning more about flashlights, there are several online sites which have photographs which show the progression of the flashlight. There are even flashlight museums that you can visit in order to get a closer look at how the flashlight has changed through the years.

Spot Signs of a Troubling Moving Company

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 3:06 am

Moving companies are the ones that usually get lot of complains. They either broke your piano, charged too much, or took forever to get the job done. I’ve moved a few times in recent years and had actually very good experience with the moving companies until the recent one. I didn’t take enough cautions in choosing the moving company because the past good experience. A troubling moving company is actually easy to spot if you ask right questions and pay enough attention to what they said. When you call a small local moving company, you’ll likely talk to the owner of the company. That’s your chance to spot the signs of a troubling company. The first sign of a troubling moving company is that the owner talks too much. This is someone who will talk the talk, not walk the walk. The second sign of a troubling moving company is the owner is concerned about whether he’ll be paid. This is the sign of over-charge in hidden cost in the past. The guy likely charged too much too often in the past and some customers refused to pay. Materials used is the major source of hidden charge for moving. For many moving companies, the charge of the materials is about 10% of the labor cost. A troubling moving company could charge you 30%. Simply asking specifically how much they’ll charge for materials will make the mover charge less because they know you know what they’re doing. If you failed to spot a troubling mover before they get to your door, working positively and proactively with the movers will reduce the damage of the mistake you made. Most movers are professional and doing good jobs. The nature of the operation attributes to much of complains they get.

If the moving is local, most moving companies don’t actually send a salesperson to your house to give you an estimate. Moving companies charge by per hour per person, and some of them charge extra for truck too. If the moving is local, you are likely have more options. For instance, you move within Boston, you’ll have dozens of Boston moving companies or Boston movers to choose from. If the moving is long distance, or even international, you’re limited to a very few companies to choose from. A local Boston moving company may not be your best option. Established moving companies are reliable and expensive. Small local moving companies are cheaper and will likely have more troubles than established ones if you failed to do your homework.

A DIY Guide to Fence Building

Filed under: Home — bruce @ 1:54 am

There is an old adage that tells us that “good fences make good neighbors.” The addition of a fence to your existing property is a major step, and there are quite a few things that must be decided and tended to before you even begin. However, don’t let this discourage you. There are also several good reasons why the building of a fence is an ideal DIY project, and not beyond the abilities of the normal homeowner. There are a lot of reasons one might have to build the fence, and these considerations control the decision as to what type of fence to build and the materials that will be used in its construction. Privacy is a prime consideration, and usually leads to a desire for a high and forbidding type of material selection. It is important to control this a bit. You do not want to spoil any possible views by making the fence too high. It is also true that thieves are not very fond of fences and the presence of a fence can protect you from unwanted access to your property, but when a fence is too high it provides a sanctuary for them. Once they are inside the fence, they are shielded from view.

When the major purpose for the fence is to provide a pen for a pet, and privacy is not a major concern, this would suggest a smaller and more open type of fencing. Chain link would get the nod here. It might also be possible that the fence has a limited purpose beyond the closing in of the entire property. A fence around a garden is an example of this. When this is the case, a good choice might be vinyl fencing. This is a newer and very versatile fencing material.

Once the decision is made as to the type of fence, and the material is selected, it is a good idea to take a good look at the code requirements for the area where you reside. Codes vary widely from locale to locale, and you need to make sure you have this area covered before you begin. It is also a good idea to have a survey of the property done prior to getting started. Nothing ruins a day more than finding out your new vinyl fence is two feet onto your neighbor’s property.

When the preliminary matters are all tended to, it is time to begin the actual construction process. It is pretty much accepted that you are going to have to dig some holes. In fact, the digging of the holes, and the placing of poles constitutes the major labor output of this project. A good post hole digger, an item that can be easily rented, is a necessity here. The placement and distance between poles is going to depend on the type of fence and the building material selected. When the fence is going to be wood, and you are planning on doing the carpentry yourself, you have a little more leeway in the hole placements. The use of chain link, or the very popular and versatile vinyl fence material, or the use of precut and prepared lumber dictates the placement, and you should be sure to follow the recommendations of the supplier.

Once the holes are dug, and the poles firmly planted, it is a simple matter of attaching the rails, nailing together the posts, or installing the chain link. Then you can sit back and enjoy your privacy, and perhaps your security, and certainly your new and improved relations with your neighbors.
