Sharing a Hobby with Your Children

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 2:06 pm

Spending time with your kids can be precious, but as they grow older they don’t always want to spend time with you. Sharing a hobby can be one way to make sure they want to be in your company. If you are looking for a new hobby, one that you can enjoy by yourself or with your children here are a few ideas.

Stirling Engine Kits – Building a Stirling engine can be great fun. These kits give you the parts and the instructions on how to build a working Stirling engine. These kits are fairly easy to build and not too expensive. In addition to spending some time together your children will also be learning the basics of mechanics.

Rock Tumblers – A rock tumbler is used to polish and shine rocks. You can put in dirty and dingy rocks and a few hours later you will have polished rocks that can be used for collecting or even as jewelry.

Coin or Stamp Collecting – This is another way to spend quality time with your kids. Searching for a certain stamp or coin can be a great way to spend the afternoon.  This hobby can be inexpensive or very expensive depending on the coins or stamps being collected.

If you are spending time with your kids it doesn’t matter if you are using a rock tumbler or collecting coins, it is time well spent.

Joining A Sorority or Fraternity Your Freshman Year

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 2:47 am

When you are a young freshman out there in the wide world of adulthood for the first time, it may be tempting to panic and lose track of all your responsibilities as a student. Many freshmen definitely lose their way the first semester so in order to gain a little structure in your life, try to join a few programs that will keep you honest, focused on your studies, and a few programs that will actually take the pressure off of leaving your family and being on your own. A women’s fraternity like Alpha Kappa Alpha can help with such things. If you haven’t thought about joining a Greek organization, then it might be time to really think about what they can do for you. A fraternity or sorority may seem like a scary place where people are irresponsible, but that is simply a picture that the media has painted for you. These organizations offer up a great place to build professional and social relationships that will last you your entire life. Places like Alpha Phi will mold you into someone that will be confident and prepared once you graduate and will leave you with quite a few friends in the process. It’s definitely time to chance your mind about going Greek.

An award winning toy, suitable for 8 year olds and above is elenco snap circuits. SC300 is one such model which includes 60 parts which ca neb used for making 300 projects like doorbell, burglar alarm, speaker, AM radio, LED. Kids can learn a lot from these kits as it gives sense of satisfaction when a project is complete and at the same time it also teaches basic electronic concepts. For building large projects one can buy additional pieces or purchase other models. Constructing electronic devices is easy and fun.

Most toy stores carry rock tumblers, which were a craze in 1970s. It uses a motor and polishes the rocks to produce semi precious stones like amethyst, jasper, agate. With the polished stones that you get, you can make bracelets, necklaces from it. Hobbyists use two kinds of rock tumblers; rotary and vibratory. It is important to learn about these first and then make a decision about buying a rock tumbler. For kids, you can get tumblers made of plastic which are not long salting and inexpensive. Hobbyist quality rotary tumblers are very popular, inexpensive and long lasting. Thus give out nice rounded stones while vibratory tumblers give angular stones.

Buying Mementos

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 1:17 pm

It can be hard when you leave college knowing what the best way is to hold on to all of those fantastic, memories. Sometimes a bunch of photographs can do it and some experiences are just never forgotten. However, sometimes you want to buy something which you can look at and will remind you of your time there. There are, often a selection of, things that you can purchase for this purpose. Some people like to buy a Delta Zeta paddle and others Alpha chi Omega sweatshirt or perhaps a Delta Delta Delta cap. It is often hard to know what will be the best thing to buy, especially as it may be something that you will want to keep for the rest of your life. These things can be expensive as well and at a time when you are unlikely to have any spare spending money it can be a choice which is made for you – determined by the cost rather than the item. Think hard about it as the item may just end up in the attic eventually and so it may not be that important to you, however, it may be something that you want to proudly display for years to come.

When looking through the newspaper you probably see a lot of wanted ads for administrative assistants. The Art of Learning

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 7:02 pm

As we age we often times feel like the world has passed us by and that we learned everything we were ever going to learn when we were in high school and college. However, that is not the case and you can still learn anything you want as you age. In fact, many times adults are better students because they are more committed to learning and they understand firsthand what they need to know and why they need to know it. So, these individuals are usually great students and do especially well with computer training. That is because computer training allows the student to focus on his studies and not on an instructor or other students in the class. This type of elearning has proven very beneficial and many big companies are using it to train their employees. Also, quite a few employees are using it in order to get ahead and learn more about their career, enhance their skills, and become an overall better employee. Lots of people find they can learn anything they want and go on to use computer training videos to enhance their knowledge about other topics that may not even be required by their employer.

The purposes and types of Fraternities and Sororities

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 1:54 pm

There are two basic types of fraternities and sororities. First of all, there are the honor fraternities that allow both men and women members as they are based on academic excellence. Many colleges have a variety of honor fraternities based on major or field of study. So, you may be accepted into the math fraternity or something of that nature although they all have Greek fraternity names. Then, there are the social fraternities and sororities.

The social fraternities and sororities are based on individuals rushing a particular house, or houses, and then receiving bids. Of all the men and women who rush each semester the houses decide on who they want to offer an invitation to join their sorority or fraternity. For those who are chosen it is a great honor. Many times to show that one has been accepted into a fraternity or sorority the sisters or brothers will show up at the pledge’s dorm room with sorority clothing or fraternity clothing that marks their acceptance as one of the brothers or sisters. Nobody wears fraternity clothing if they aren’t part of that particular fraternity. As a result receiving a t shirt with the Greek letters of your new sorority or fraternity is a very special moment. But, what are the social fraternities’ purpose?

Many of the social fraternities and sororities claim to be service oriented. However, they are more social based than service based despite doing some good for the community. Most of the sisters and brothers are required to take part in a variety of different service activities through the year although there are considerably more parties than community activities. Nevertheless, sororities and fraternities do some good for their communities and many times team up for fundraisers.

There are strict rules governing sororities and fraternities despite all the parties and fun they have. Brothers and sisters must maintain a certain GPA, which differs in each house, to remain part of the house. If a member’s GPA falls below a certain level they will be given probation and must imp[rove their grades to remain part of the house. If this does not happen then the individual will be kicked out of the house. There are quite a few other rules as well and some of them govern the Greek clothing that both sororities and fraternities wear.

Rushing a sorority or fraternity is not a great idea for everyone, but for those who enjoy this type of lifestyle they will certainly love it.

A Brief History of Nursing Education

Filed under: Education — bruce @ 5:35 pm

When people think of the history of nursing education many immediately think of Florence Nightingale. However, nursing goes back even further than that. In fact, during the 18th century a slave named James Derham was able to buy his own freedom from the money he earned as a nurse. Nobody knew back then that a nursing education could be obtained in any other way than simply hands on through an apprenticeship. But, today there are many ways to study and learn more about nursing. Great examples of these are online nursing education and nursing continuing education. But, it took a long time for these nursing programs to develop. And, they are descendents of the first nursing program that was established in the 1850s in London. Japan’s first nursing institute was established in 1885 and the first nursing institute for blacks in the United States followed the next year. The field of nursing was growing rapidly with the influences of individuals like Florence Nightingale and Claray Barton who established the Red Cross.

In the late 1800s the idea of visiting nursing was established by Lillian Wald and she began teaching a home nursing class. The American Nurses Association held its first meeting and the topics discussed helped further nursing education. Nurses began to be regulated on a national basis by New Zealand in 1901 and then other countries around the world began to follow suit.

The first nursing education that was established in the United States on the basis of education rather than the needs of hospitals was at Yale University in 1923. The Yale School of Nursing had its own curriculum and students were required to meet the educational standards of the university in order to graduate. This really set the stage for the future of education and since then universities across the nation have developed nursing programs of their own. Then, in the 1950s Colombia University offered a master’s in nursing and was the first university to do so. This really changed the nursing environment and allowed for nursing continuing education and nurses to grow in their chosen profession.

Now, more than 80 years later, a nursing education is available at college campuses, via online courses, and even through nursing continuing education. Men and women who want to become nurses can do so around their schedule and take advantage of all the study options for this amazing profession. There are many choices when it comes to an online nursing education and prospective nurses should really compare all of the programs to ensure they are studying from the best online university and are learning as much about nursing as possible.
