Religion and Organ Donation

Religions are about our souls, and organ donation is about our physical bodies. When it comes to organ donation, however, people are largely impacted by their religious believes. Although different religions often have different moral codes, practices, values, institutions, and rituals associated with their beliefs, the majority of religions, Amish or Catholicism, actually encourage organ donation. United Methodists, one of the largest religions, welcomes organ donation too. Catholicism, on the other hand, leaves the choice of organ donation to the individuals, and the church does agree that organ donation is an act of kindness.The interesting thing is that not all religions encourage body donation for science. The idea was that if you are helping out another person for their well being, donating your organs is wonderful. However, by donating your body for experiments, you are not helping someone else’s life or saving a heart or a liver. Donating your body to science may be controversial, the argument doesn’t really make sense if we look just one step further. The truth is that body donation to science will help medical scientists to discover the new ways to cure the diseases, and thus save more lives in the long run.
